Judge sets Ryan Routh assassination attempt trial for November
SUMMARY
Judge Aileen Cannon has scheduled Ryan Routh’s trial to begin on November 18, 2024, in federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida, just two weeks after Election Day. Routh is accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump earlier this month while Trump was golfing at Trump International Golf Club. Routh faces five charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. If convicted, Routh could face a maximum penalty of life in prison. He pleaded not guilty on Monday and is being represented by public defenders after informing the court he could not afford legal representation. Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, was randomly assigned to this case after previously overseeing Trump’s classified documents trial, which was dismissed and is now under appeal.
