Teeming metropolis that was once the pride of America is now the least desirable place to live in the country
SUMMARY
A new poll from Clever has labeled Washington, D.C., as the least desirable place to live in the United States. The survey, conducted in June with 1,000 respondents and supplemented by U.S. Census migration data, found that 33% of participants considered the nation's capital among the top five worst cities, up from 20% last year. Factors such as high cost of living were cited by 65% of respondents as making a place undesirable. Washington, D.C.'s rising crime, including 274 murders in 2023, the highest since 1997, has also contributed to its negative perception. Mayor Muriel Bowser's "equitable" crime policies have faced criticism from residents for worsening the city's quality of life. Conversely, Tampa, Florida, was ranked as the most desirable city, praised for its low crime rates, affordable housing, and favorable tax policies.
