Fire still burning after freight train derails on Arizona-New Mexico state line

A freight train carrying non-odorous propane and gasoline derailed and caught fire near the Arizona-New Mexico state line on Friday, leading to the closure of Interstate 40, a major trucking route. The incident occurred near Lupton, Arizona, with passersby sharing photos and videos of the wreckage and billowing smoke. No injuries were reported, and nearby residences and a truck stop were evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, with BNSF Railway personnel working to clear the wreckage. The derailment impacted traffic, causing significant backups and rerouting on I-40 and surrounding highways. Amtrak also canceled some passenger travel on the route between Los Angeles and Albuquerque. The Arizona Corporation Commission reported that 10 rail cars were involved, two of which were transporting liquid petroleum. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
